About the event

The ancient goddess Hekate is known in a variety of aspects, most notably as the ruler of crossroads, magic, and spirits of the dead. Her name was emblematic of witchcraft in the European middle ages, and her stories played a central role in the mythology of classical paganism. Join author and occultist Melissa Madara for a deep dive into the winding, snaking history of the nightmare goddess in all her various epithets, examining her origins and legacy from Asia Minor to modern neopaganism.

This lecture will examine Hekate's pre-historical origins, her rituals and cults in the ancient world, her demonization in the Roman empire, and her sacred signs, symbols, and iconography. While this class is grounded in history, we will be paying special attention to magical material, spells, and invocations associated with Hekate, exploring her rulership as goddess of the witches in depth.
