This formula has been used to diagnose and cure diseases, make botanical elections in magical operations, determine suitable offerings to spirits, and produce astrological charms and talismans from plants. For doctors and herbalists of history, the movements and natures of the planets were often an important aspect of medical practice. Nicholas Culpeper, a revolutionary herbalist of the 17th century, famously said that medicine practiced without astrology was "like a lamp without oil."
